BRUTAL 
 

In the “Brutal” series I experiment with the use of prefabricated and standardized construction components supported solely by their own weight. In the manner of the industrial sensibilities of the Arte Povera movement, I intend to transform seemingly uncomplicated objects and materials into deeply resonant carriers of meaning. To me it is fascinating how simple gestures, like rotating or placing an inanimate object into a different context can give it human-like expressions.

During my architecture studies in Caracas I became obsessed with Brutalist architecture and the massive, monolithic and rigid characteristics of that architectural style. The “honest” concrete structures of great architects like Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn and Carlos Raul Villanueva deeply influenced the conception of this series.
